Extremely busy and totally stressed? Feeling overwhelmed by everything you need to get done? Operating on a deadline, and can’t seem to get anywhere with the project you’re working on? Learn to harness the power of these two simple words – enjoy and rest!
Individuals in today’s society are extremely performance-driven. We feel the need to continually be DOING something. I realized just how strong this urge is when I was praying the other morning, asking God if there was anything out-of-the-ordinary He wanted me to accomplish that day. His response was surprising – “Enjoy!” Really?!? THOSE where God’s instructions for me? To simply enjoy my day??? That certainly was not what I’d anticipated, but it definitely makes sense. After all, 1 Timothy 6:17 specifically says that He’s given us all things to enjoy! This being the case, why do we so rarely take Him at His Word?
Making time to purposefully slow down and enjoy the everyday blessings God has given us establishes us in an attitude of rest. It is out of that posture of rest that God is able to go to work on our behalf. Feel stressed? Rest and then work! Take a short break to enjoy doing something that relaxes you, then get back at it. (This article actually came out of a walk I took, talking to God and simply enjoying the beautiful fall colors!) Doing so causes us to flow with the supply God is always providing. Our best work often comes out of those moments of enjoyment and rest because it’s no longer about us struggling to accomplish a goal, but rather about allowing God to work through us, enabling us to get done what we need to get done.
Resting isn’t selfish or unproductive. It actually takes humility to rest in spite of a busy schedule because the product of rest can only be acknowledged as a gift from Him. If we accomplish our goals through continual striving, we’re likely to want to take the credit for our achievements. On the other hand, when it’s done out of a place of rest and enjoyment, we KNOW what we’ve accomplished is from God, and can’t help but give Him the glory!
Don’t let society’s mindset of extreme busyness and constant activity cheat you out of the benefits of enjoying life, and making time for moments of rest. If you’ll go against the grain and employ this often-overlooked strategy for success, you’ll find yourself far ahead of your colleagues in the long run!
